The "National Diet Library Great East Japan Earthquake Archive" (Nicknamed: HINAGIKU) allows for integrated search and utilization of records related to the Great East Japan Earthquake and other earthquake disasters by linking with databases on the searchable database list and collection of digital records.

The National Diet Library Great East Japan Earthquake Archive classifies metadata* acquired from linked databases and metadata created at the Library into 5 categories of "Document materials", "Websites", "Photos", "Audio/Video" and "Other".
(*Metadata refers not to the materials themselves but to information on the materials.)
Searches can be refined by specifying to refine "by material type" when searching*.

The full text/body of some materials is also included, and searches can be carried out for only materials viewable on the web by checking the "Exclude" checkbox on the [Materials viewable via the Web] item on the advanced search screen.

*[Note] Whole or part of some materials included in linked database are classified as "Other" due to the metadata specifications of linked databases. For this reason, when carrying out broad searches, it is recommended that "Other" also be selected. Please see "Other" for more details.

Document materials

The metadata, and for some materials full data, on the Great East Japan Earthquake, other earthquake disasters and related books, magazines, magazine articles, documents, etc. is included.*
Full text materials which consist of machine-readable text can be included in searches by checking [Include full text].
*As noted above, many of the document materials are classified as "Other", so it is recommended that "Other" also be selected when carrying out searches for these materials. Please see "Other" for more details.

Websites

Site metadata is extracted from sites which post information related to the Great East Japan Earthquake from among websites collected by the National Diet Library Web Archiving Project (WARP).
WARP increased its collection frequency for the websites of local governments in afflicted areas, country related organizations and other sites since the occurrence of the Great East Japan Earthquake until March 2012, allowing the changes in websites to be observed.*

  • March 14 to 31 of 2011 - Collection of the websites in local governments in afflicted areas was carried out every day when possible, and once a week for national organizations.
  • April 2011 to March 2013 - Scope expanded beyond the above and collection is carried out once a week.
  • April 2013 onward - Collection is carried out at normal intervals (once a month for government organizations and 4 times per year for other public institutions and businesses and organizations from which consent was obtained for collection of Great East Japan Earthquake related information).

*Please note that deeper level portions of websites may not be included for periods of increased collection frequency.
