Photographs of Chuetsu Earthquake: Top page of NDL Great East Japan Earthquake Archive (HINAGIKU), 2022

It has been nearly eighteen years since the Chuetsu Earthquake struck Niigata Prefecture on October 23, 2004. In commemoration of this tragic natural disaster, five photographs from the Historical archive section in Nagaoka City Central Library will be exhibited on the top page of HINAGIKU from October 21 to November 6.

In addition to local historical materials, the Historical archive section in Nagaoka City Central Library also makes records of the Chuetsu Earthquake and other events available to the public. It collects documentary materials related to disasters and reconstruction in Nagaoka City, and works with citizen volunteers to organise and preserve them, passing on the experiences and memories of the disaster to the future.
